As part of the AKOFADA Project, Shega has been localizing DFS terminology into Amharic and Afan Oromo by reviewing existing translations, fixing inconsistencies, and making key terms clearer and more usable.

We are now inviting feedback on the Amharic translations through a validation session.

Ethiopia now boasts over 540,000 reported number of agents, processing ETB 889 billion in transaction value and 125 million transactions.

Although the agent network has expanded significantly, most agents remain inactive. Many process only a handful of transactions each day, making it difficult to sustain operations and cover costs. Yesterday’s DFS Mixer built directly on the themes raised in our first session, keeping the focus on practical evidence and the gaps providers are working to address.

The discussion highlighted new findings on the future of agent banking, the role of DFS in informal markets, and emerging opportunities for women centric financial products. We also walked through two spotlight presentations: a case study on women inclusive product design and a practical marketing guide aimed at strengthening outreach, trust, and user education.

Leaders from fintech, banks, and microfinance institutions added depth to the conversation by sharing feedback from the field, raising important questions, and helping link the research to day-to-day realities.

As part of the AKOFADA initiatives, the Behavioral Change Campaign team at Shega, together with our partners, has been working across regions to build trust, confidence, and everyday use of digital financial services. Through local language radio programs, community roadshows, and direct teaching sessions, the campaign meets people where they are and helps make digital finance simple and practical for real daily needs. Over the weekend, this work continued in West Oromia, where an organized, vibrant, and colorful DFS community edutainment event took place in the center of Ambo. Women remain significantly underrepresented in Ethiopia’s financial landscape. Eighty-six percent of women lack a mobile money account, and 78% have no digital financial service (DFS) account, limiting their ability to participate in and benefit from the digital economy. Expanding women’s access to digital finance could lift 700,000 people out of poverty and add USD 5.3 billion to Ethiopia’s GDP — a powerful reminder that inclusion drives both equality and growth.

Today Shega joined the FCA Ethiopia Job Fair at WeVenture Hub, hosted under the Digital and Creative Economies (DICE) Project. We met early career creatives and digital talent across digital marketing, graphic design, and photo and video editing, and had direct conversations about the skills employers are hiring for right now.
