As part of the AKOFADA Project, Shega has been localizing DFS terminology into Amharic and Afan Oromo by reviewing existing translations, fixing inconsistencies, and making key terms clearer and more usable.

We are now inviting feedback on the Amharic translations through a validation session.

Ethiopia now boasts over 540,000 reported number of agents, processing ETB 889 billion in transaction value and 125 million transactions.

Although the agent network has expanded significantly, most agents remain inactive. Many process only a handful of transactions each day, making it difficult to sustain operations and cover costs. Women remain significantly underrepresented in Ethiopia’s financial landscape. Eighty-six percent of women lack a mobile money account, and 78% have no digital financial service (DFS) account, limiting their ability to participate in and benefit from the digital economy.
