The bar chart compares the percentage of maximum water levels in reservoirs across six Australian cities in October 2009 and October 2010. Overall, reservoir levels rose in most cities over the one-year period, with particularly sharp increases in Brisbane and Canberra. By contrast, Perth experienced a substantial decline, while Sydney’s figures remained unchanged. In 2010, Brisbane recorded the highest proportion of stored water among all the cities shown.

In October 2009, Darwin and Brisbane had the highest reservoir levels, both standing at 75%, followed by Perth at just over half of capacity (51%). Canberra and Sydney recorded similar figures, at around 50%, whereas Melbourne had the lowest level, at only 35%.

By October 2010, water storage had increased noticeably in several locations. Brisbane saw the most dramatic rise, reaching full capacity at 100%, while Canberra also climbed significantly to 73%. Darwin and Melbourne experienced more moderate growth, rising to 80% and 45% respectively. In contrast, Perth’s reservoir level fell sharply from 51% to just 26%, representing the largest decrease. Sydney was the only city to show no change, remaining stable at 49% in both years.

Some people argue that plastic products should be replaced with less environmentally harmful materials such as glass. I fully agree with this view, as the widespread use of plastic causes long-term environmental damage and viable alternatives are increasingly available.

One compelling reason to reduce plastic use is the environmental cost of its production. Most plastics are derived from fossil fuels, meaning that their manufacture requires the extraction of oil and natural gas. This process consumes enormous amounts of energy and releases significant quantities of greenhouse gases, contributing directly to climate change. In contrast, materials such as glass can be produced and recycled repeatedly without substantial loss in quality, making them a more sustainable option in the long run.

Another major concern relates to the disposal of plastic waste. Single-use plastics are notoriously difficult to manage once discarded. Large volumes end up in landfills, where they can release harmful chemicals into soil and groundwater, while others are incinerated, emitting toxic fumes into the atmosphere. Even more alarmingly, millions of tonnes of plastic waste are dumped into the oceans each year, posing a severe threat to marine ecosystems. Glass, on the other hand, is chemically inert and does not break down into micro-particles that contaminate food chains.

Finally, the durability of plastic, often considered an advantage, is in fact one of its greatest environmental drawbacks. Unlike biodegradable materials, plastics can persist in the environment for centuries. For example, a single plastic bottle may take over a hundred years to decompose, during which time it continues to endanger wildlife. Replacing such products with reusable and recyclable materials would significantly reduce long-term environmental harm.

In conclusion, plastic products pose a serious threat to the environment due to their energy-intensive production, problematic disposal, and extreme persistence in nature. Therefore, replacing them with environmentally friendly materials such as glass is not only desirable but essential for sustainable development.
