Monoculture vs. syntropic agroforestry - what's the difference?

“More than a change in practices, it is a shift in paradigm.

→ What is the story behind this illustration?

I have been studying syntropic agroforestry for the last 5 years and since then that my worldview of agriculture and nature has changed. So I worked with the talented Ukranian biologist and illustrator Odarka H. to create an image that could shed light on the difference between this land use system and a monoculture over time. The aim is to enable more people to learn about syntropic agroforestry, even if you haven't been on a syntropic farm yet!

→ Monoculture vs. syntropic agroforestry - what's the difference?

In a traditional monoculture system, we plant the same species of plants in high density in the same plot over time time. Without adding fertilizers, the fertility of the land reduces over time, which means yields progressively decline until we are left with little but bare soil. In order to keep yields constant, farmers need to increase the quantity or efficiency of fertilizer application creating often a cycle of dependency and lack of profitability.

In syntropic agroforestry, we plant in even greater density than monoculture but following the principles of ecological succession and stratification. The term "syntropic agriculture" was coined by the farmer Ernst Gotsch and he often says this form of agriculture is entirely based on knowledge of ecological processes, which means water and nutrients can be mostly generated on-site without relying on external inputs. The result is a living system that produces more food more beautifully than any other system and that evolves over time - like Nature does! This is why syntropic agroforestry can only be described through a sequence of images, and not a single snapshot.

→ What is the difference in paradigm between these systems?

Monoculture is sourced often from an extractive paradigm where we aim to extract as much yield of a plant in as little time as possible. Other living beings are seen as competitors fighting for nutrients. Many plants are tagged as "invasive" and many insects and fungi as "pests".

Syntropic agroforestry is sourced from a regenerative paradigm where we partner with nature to concentrate and complexify life. This creates a surplus of energy we can re-invest on the landscape and harvest for our own livelihood. Its rained a lot lately... several inches over the past week and our pastures are showing it. However, that didnt stop us from having our second calving of the season yesterday. It was a bull this time, so in a couple days we'll have to catch him and band him. Thats two successful calvings this year so far!

We've had a handful of warm weather days and the clover is starting to come back from its winter break. Clover is a huge benefit to regenerative agriculture farms because its a nitrogen fixer and is a great source of high protein forage in the beginning and end of the seasons. Since we dont use synthetic fertilizers on our pastures, having plants that add nitrogen back to the soil is a critical part of feeding our pastures. Soon this clover will be 7-8 inches tall and will be ready to rotationally graze with the cattle.

Microbial Inheritance In Plants

“Seeds harbor more than just a plant's genetic future – they are living capsules that transmit not only genetic material, but entire communities of microorganisms from one plant generation to the next.

This process, known as microbial inheritance, is deepening our understanding of plant biology and exposing critical oversights in modern breeding practices.

It starts with the parent plant, where microbes travel to developing seeds through two distinct pathways. The primary route follows the plant's vascular system, while a second, less understood path involves transmission through reproductive cells during fertilization.

These inherited microbes aren't random hitchhikers – they're specialized symbionts that help plants grow, fight diseases, and adapt to stress.

During seed dormancy, these microbial communities face a dramatic challenge. Their populations crash as seeds dehydrate, creating a natural bottleneck that selects for organisms capable of surviving extreme conditions. Some microbes enter dormant states, while others maintain minimal metabolic activity. This period forms the microbial community that will emerge with the next generation.

When seeds germinate, surviving microbes colonize the developing seedling with remarkable precision. Different species migrate to specific plant tissues – some to the leaves, others to the roots – suggesting a highly organized process.

These inherited microbes compete and collaborate with soil organisms to establish the seedling's microbiome, setting the stage for the plant's future health.

Traditional breeding programs have inadvertently disrupted these crucial relationships. By focusing solely on plant genetics while ignoring the inherited microbiome, we've often bred out natural resistance mechanisms that depend on microbial partners.

Recent research suggests that parental breeding lines can predict seed microbiome composition, opening the door to microbiome-aware breeding strategies.

This could lead to crops that naturally resist pests and diseases, require fewer chemical inputs, adapt to environmental stress, and express full nutritional and flavor potential – all through their inherited microbial partners.

This emerging field challenges the view of plants as autonomous organisms as well as current approaches to crop improvement.

Reasons Why Quail Might Be Right For You:

-Quail are small and take up less space than chickens. This makes them great for urban backyards and small spaces.

-They lay little speckled eggs that are both gorgeous and delicious! Quail eggs are slightly higher in protein but are pretty much interchangeable with chicken eggs in most recipes.

-Quail are very quiet, and you’re allowed to keep males too (whereas male chickens aren’t allowed in most urban areas). Male quails ‘crow’ but the sound is like a trill and isn’t loud at all!

-Like chickens, they are great at eating greens and poopin’ organic fertiliser for your garden!

COMMUNING WITH PLANTS
(using Goethe's 7 step method)

Below is a summary of introduction and the 7 steps themselves. The whole process is akin to climbing a mountain and being a different person from the experience of the journey when you come down the other side.

Pre-stage FIRST IMPRESSIONS begins even before meeting the plant on the basis that something has attracted us to meet this particular plant or person and is said to result from an openness of ‘soul’ on first meeting - an ‘intuitive precognition’.

Stage 1. EXACT SENSE PERCEPTION is familiar to conventional science as factual information gathering i.e. of keenly observing the physical attributes of the plant. We are working in the earth element, chipping away at the facts.

Stage 2. EXACT SENSORIAL IMAGINATION is analogous with synthesis, the putting together of facts to allow appreciation of the plant or patient as a living growing being. It involves following the growth process of a plant, for example, how it looked this time last year or will look this time next year or identifying a person’s core, inherent constitution and how or why the person has deviated from that in the present time. We are moving between the facts in a fluid manner analogous to the water element.

Stage 3. GLIMPSING THE BEING This can be seen as an “Aha!” experience as something about the plant ‘clicks’ within us and follows a meditative group rebuilding of the plant from memory whilst observing any inner movement within us related to qualities and emotions eg warmth travelling to stomach area and feelings of expansion and freedom. The inspirational glimpses are akin to the quick movement of the air element.

Stage 4. BEING THE BEING is that of attaining conscious intuition or ‘becoming one with’ or ‘co-resonating’. In other words ‘being at one’ with the ‘essence’ or ‘idea’ of the plant or person eg, this plant would be useful for tight cramping in the digestive system and could help a person become open to problems relating to their solar plexus and/or issues seeming at first overwhelming and difficult to digest. The clarity and passion that accompanies this stage is working in the fire element.

Stage 5. CATCHING THE ESSENSE is concerned with condensing or capturing the idea arrived at in stage 4. This requires a further synthesis of how to best express the intention of the plant: which part could be used (root, stem, leaf, flower or fruit or mixture) to best resonate with aiding a person to reset their healing intention. A rebuilding group meditation of the study experience so far is key at this point to ground the gesture of the plant. The vibrational movement here is associated with the air element again.

Stage 6. INCARNATING THE IDEA
is growing the idea or remedy into matter involving an ‘alchemical’ distillation of stages 4 & 5.
When studying plants, once a consensus on the plants’ possible medicinal use has been achieved, the decision of how to produce certain extracts or preparations from the plant are made. These are often collected and prepared on site and with active participation of the person encouraged as part of this refinement process. The form of the medicine is experimented with (eg. it could be prepared as a tincture, infusion, massage oil, essential oil, foot and hand bath, herb pillow, talisman to wear, seed to sow and grow etc.) as well as dosage and frequency of administration determined. The fluidity of moving from one idea to the next brings us back to the water element.

Stage 7. PRODUCTION OF MEDICINE and is the production of the new medicinal product. The “spirit dying into matter” brings us full circle back to the earth element."

“Most greenhouses cost $30K-50K/year to heat.

This one costs $0. And it’s my personal favourite.

A conventional greenhouse usually works like this:

-> works against winter with continual energy inputs
-> has a heater running 24/7

…which produces $3,000-5,000/month in heating costs.

A passive solar greenhouse on the other hand: Works with physics instead of against it.

The design:

💪🏼ICF foundation walls, highly insulated on 3 sides.
☀️Glazing on the southeast side collects solar radiation during the day.
🪈Pipes run down to the subsoil, pulling heat down and storing it.

When it gets cold at night, the stored heat pushes back up into the greenhouse, which results in 40 tons of thermal mass working as a natural battery.

Zero heating costs through -30°C Alberta winters.

Real-world example:

This one was designed for Hall Services: a school that teaches, feeds, and cares for families with complex mental health needs.

The greenhouse supplies them with nutrient-dense food their families generally don't have access to at home.

The ROI:

Conventional: $36K/year in heating = $360K over 10 years

Passive solar: $0/year in heating

And this is massive right now because of what’s happening in Canada (not just the insanely cold winter we’ve been having 😅🥶)

Canada just announced immediate tax expensing for greenhouse buildings acquired after November 4, 2025 for producers.

The world is waking up to the fact that food security means everything. And doing it with nature on your side is the only way that makes sense.

Medicinal Herbals For The Home Grower

Every bioregion & culture has its traditional sacred herbals and wisdom passed down from generation to generation. These days, there are many well-known herbals available by seed or plant worldwide that can help any home-grower build up their own locally adapted medicinal garden.

Many herbals are consumed as teas or tinctures, but others can be eaten or applied as a poultice & even laid fresh against the body as salves, and so much more.

Here are 12 herbal seed varieties you can grow at home and a few of their uses; *reminder each herb variety has vast applications, this is a mere example to pique your interest.

Always make sure to do your research when planning your family's herbal needs, hire local herbalists for education and support the herbal wisdom keepers near you as you further awaken your inner connection to plant healing and herbals.

🌱Aloes (Aloe Veras)
Part Used: pulp inside leaves
Support: stimulates cell regeneration, inflammation & pain, digestion, soothing for gut/skin

Natural Farming - Thank you for the trees!

Thanks to your latest donations, we are able to plant 100 trees on the new land! Almonds, pistachios, cherries, apples, pears, and nectarines for now — with lots more variety to come.

We are so happy that, slowly, these 4.5 hectares are becoming green again. The land is happy, and so are we! 🥳🤩🥳

Monoculture vs. syntropic agroforestry - what's the difference?

“More than a change in practices, it is a shift in paradigm.

→ What is the story behind this illustration?

I have been studying syntropic agroforestry for the last 5 years and since then that my worldview of agriculture and nature has changed. So I worked with the talented Ukranian biologist and illustrator Odarka H. to create an image that could shed light on the difference between this land use system and a monoculture over time. The aim is to enable more people to learn about syntropic agroforestry, even if you haven't been on a syntropic farm yet!

→ Monoculture vs. syntropic agroforestry - what's the difference?

In a traditional monoculture system, we plant the same species of plants in high density in the same plot over time time. Without adding fertilizers, the fertility of the land reduces over time, which means yields progressively decline until we are left with little but bare soil. In order to keep yields constant, farmers need to increase the quantity or efficiency of fertilizer application creating often a cycle of dependency and lack of profitability.

In syntropic agroforestry, we plant in even greater density than monoculture but following the principles of ecological succession and stratification. The term "syntropic agriculture" was coined by the farmer Ernst Gotsch and he often says this form of agriculture is entirely based on knowledge of ecological processes, which means water and nutrients can be mostly generated on-site without relying on external inputs. The result is a living system that produces more food more beautifully than any other system and that evolves over time - like Nature does! This is why syntropic agroforestry can only be described through a sequence of images, and not a single snapshot.

→ What is the difference in paradigm between these systems?

Monoculture is sourced often from an extractive paradigm where we aim to extract as much yield of a plant in as little time as possible. Other living beings are seen as competitors fighting for nutrients. Many plants are tagged as "invasive" and many insects and fungi as "pests".

Syntropic agroforestry is sourced from a regenerative paradigm where we partner with nature to concentrate and complexify life. This creates a surplus of energy we can re-invest on the landscape and harvest for our own livelihood.
