The bar chart compares the spending of 18-20-year-olds across five categories in 2010 and 2014.
Overall, food accounted for the largest share of young individuals’ outlay in both years, while books had the smallest share of expenditure, particularly in 2014. In addition, expenditure on food, smartphones and toiletries increased significantly, whereas spending on clothes remained unchanged.
In 2010, young individuals spent the majority of their money on food, at $3,700, followed by clothes at exactly $2,500. Smartphones and toiletries recorded comparable figures, around $2,000 apiece, whereas books attracted the lowest amount of spending, accounting for $1,000.
Over the following four years, spending on food continued to rise, climbing to $4,400, while the amount spent on clothes remained stable at the same level. 18-20-year-olds also increased their allocation to smartphones to $2,600, while outlay on toiletries stood at exactly $2,000. By contrast, spending on books declined marginally to $500 in 2014.
