+++Steinmeier: “Ukraine is not alone”

The war in Ukraine has been going on for three years, with devastating consequences for the country. Germany is also commemorating the victims of Russian aggression.

On the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier recalled the suffering of the population, but also their resilience. “Three years have passed since the watershed moment of 24 February 2022 – three years of suffering, violence and loss for the people of Ukraine. But also three years of determined defence of freedom and sovereignty,” said the German head of state. The people of Ukraine were not only fighting for their territory, he said: “They are fighting for democracy, for self-determination, for a free Europe – all the values that are fundamental to us as well.” Germany would continue to support Ukraine with humanitarian and military aid, said the Federal President, as well as providing assistance and protection for refugees. Germany would stand by Ukraine in its reconstruction efforts, too, said Steinmeier. “Ukraine is not alone,” the Federal President emphasised.

On the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, numerous events are planned across Germany to commemorate the victims, sending out a message of peace. These include mourning demonstrations, church prayers and official remembrance ceremonies.

On 24 February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his troops to invade neighbouring Ukraine at dawn. Since then the country has faced an existential threat. There are no exact figures, but estimates suggest the number of war casualties is in the tens of thousands – possibly even in the hundreds of thousands.

На протяжении трех лет продолжается война в Украине, имея разрушительные последствия для страны. В Германии вспоминают жертв российской агрессии.

В третью годовщину войны в Украине федеральный президент Франк-Вальтер Штайнмайер напомнил не только о страданиях украинского народа, но и о его стойкости. «Прошло три года с эпохального события 24 февраля 2022 года – три года, полных страдания, насилия и потерь для украинцев. Но также и три года решительной защиты свободы и суверенитета», – сказал глава немецкого государства. Украинцы сражаются не только за свою территорию. «Они борются за демократию, за самоопределение, за свободную Европу – за все те ценности, которые являются фундаментальными в том числе и для нас». Германия и дальше продолжит поддерживать Украину и оказывать ей гуманитарную и военную помощь, а также предоставлять защиту беженцам. На этапе восстановления Украины Германия тоже будет рядом. «Украина не одинока», – подчеркнул Штайнмайер.

В годовщину вторжения России в Украину во многих городах Германии чтят память жертв и призывают к миру. Запланированы траурные демонстрации, молебны в церквях и официальные памятные мероприятия.

24 февраля 2022 года президент России Владимир Путин приказал своим войскам на рассвете вторгнуться в соседнюю страну. С тех пор существование Украины оказалось под угрозой. Точных цифр нет, но, по оценкам экспертов, число погибших в этой войне исчисляется десятками тысяч, а возможно даже и сотнями тысяч.

+++Germany supports new chip factory

The semiconductor manufacturer Infineon expands its production capacities in Dresden, and therefore contributes to supply reliability for Germany and Europe.

Germany supports the construction of a new chip factory in Dresden with 920 million euros. The European Commission in Brussels has approved the grant for construction of the production facility for the German semiconductor group Infineon. The company plans to invest around 3.4 billion euros to create additional production capacities for power semiconductors, which are to be used in the areas of energy generation and electromobility in particular. "The project promotes reliable chip supply for Germany and Europe, as well as reducing critical dependency in a high-tech field," said Minister for Economics Robert Habeck. He added that the project also demonstrated "that Germany is an attractive and competitive investment location for highly innovative technologies such as micro-electronics".

Planning provides for production to begin in 2026. Infineon has been based in Dresden as a producer since 1994. According to information provided by the company, a staff of 3,900 is currently working on the two existing production lines for 200mm and 300mm silicon discs, producing more than 400 different products.

Германия выделит 920 млн евро на строительство нового завода по производству микросхем в Дрездене. Еврокомиссия в Брюсселе одобрила выделение помощи на строительство завода немецкого концерна Infineon, производящего полупроводники. Компания планирует вложить в общей сложности около 3,4 млрд евро, создав тем самым дополнительные производственные мощности для выпуска силовых полупроводниковых приборов, которые будут использоваться, в частности, в сфере энергетики и электротранспорта. «Данный проект повышает надежность поставок микросхем в Германии и Европе и снижает критическую зависимость в высокотехнологичном секторе», — заявил министр экономики Роберт Хабек. В то же время эта инициатива показывает, «что Германия является привлекательным и конкурентоспособным местом для инвестиций в такие высокоинновационные технологии, как микроэлектроника».

Запуск производства запланирован на 2026 год. Infineon работает в Дрездене с 1994 года. По данным компании, на сегодняшний день, на двух линиях по производству 200- и 300-миллиметровых кремниевых пластин, где задействовано 3900 сотрудников, выпускается более 400 различных изделий.

Канцлер Германии Олаф Шольц решительно отверг утверждение президента США Дональда Трампа о том, что президент Украины Владимир Зеленский является «диктатором». «Заявлять, что президент Зеленский не имеет демократической легитимности, просто ошибочно и опасно, — сказал Шольц в интервью. — Правда состоит в том, что Владимир Зеленский — законно избранный глава украинского государства. То, что в условиях войны невозможно провести надлежащие выборы, соответствует положениям конституции Украины и избирательным законам. И никто не вправе утверждать обратное».

Министр иностранных дел Германии Анналена Бербок также резко отклонила обвинения Трампа. «Это полный абсурд. Если не только строчить твиты, но и смотреть на реальный мир, то станет ясно, кто в Европе, увы, вынужден жить в условиях диктатуры: это люди в России, люди в Беларуси», — сказала Бербок в эфире телеканала ZDF. Министр призвала европейцев к единству. «Главное, чтобы мы, европейцы, сохраняли спокойствие в эти трудные времена и были едины в борьбе за наш мир, — сказала она. — Америка также заинтересована в том, чтобы в Европе был только прочный и длительный мир».
